Key Takeaways

Dental fear is common, and a thoughtful appointment can feel much more manageable when your care team understands what you need.

  • Tell the dental team about your anxiety before treatment begins.
  • Ask questions about what will happen and agree on a stop signal.
  • A first visit may focus on conversation, examination, and planning.
  • Simple preparation can make your visit to a nervous-patient-friendly clinic feel calmer.
  • Severe fear deserves compassionate support and a discussion about appropriate options.

Understanding Dental Anxiety

Dental anxiety can make an ordinary appointment feel physically and emotionally overwhelming. Some people feel uneasy only before a cleaning, while others avoid care for years because the fear feels impossible to control. If you’re nervous about an upcoming dental appointment, that reaction doesn’t mean you’re difficult or unreasonable. It means your concerns deserve to be heard.

What is Dental Anxiety?

Dental anxiety is a strong feeling of worry, tension, or fear connected with dental care. It can show up as a racing heart, nausea, muscle tension, trouble sleeping, or a strong urge to cancel. Sometimes the anxiety is tied to a previous painful or embarrassing experience; sometimes it comes from not knowing what will happen. Naming the feeling is a useful first step because it gives you and the dental team something specific to work with.

Common Triggers – Why People Feel Nervous About Going to the Dentist

Triggers vary from person to person. The sound of instruments, the sensation of being unable to speak, needles, gagging, sensitive teeth, or fear of being judged can all contribute. Even a long gap between appointments may create embarrassment, especially when someone worries that their oral health will be criticized. A sense of control matters: knowing that you can ask for an explanation, pause, or break often changes how the appointment feels.

What Should You Tell Your Dentist About Your Anxiety?

You do not need to explain your entire history perfectly. A short, honest statement such as “I feel very anxious about dental treatment” gives the team a chance to adjust the pace and communication. Tell them what has been difficult in the past, whether you have trouble with needles or sounds, and what helps you feel safer.

It is also helpful to share practical details. Mention whether you have postponed care because of fear, whether you have had a panic response in a dental chair, and whether you take medication or have medical conditions that may affect treatment. You can ask for a step-by-step explanation, request a pause signal, or arrange for the first appointment to focus mainly on an assessment and conversation.

Before booking, you can also review a simple appointment preparation guide for reminders about arrival time, paperwork, oral-health concerns, and discussing anxiety in advance. The goal is not to be calm. The goal is to give the team useful information so the visit can be planned around your needs.

Your First Visit to Trillium Dental Orléans

A first appointment does not have to feel like a test that you must pass. It is an opportunity to meet the team, explain your concerns, and understand what care may be appropriate. At Trillium Dental Orléans, a nervous patient can begin by describing their comfort level before any treatment is discussed in detail – our team, including hygienists like Kelsey and dentists such as Dr. Yamisleidis Aguilar, is used to starting there.

What to Expect During Your Initial Consultation

The initial consultation may include questions about your dental history, current concerns, general health, and previous experiences. The dentist may examine your mouth and recommend diagnostic steps, but you can ask what each step involves before agreeing to it. You should leave with a clearer sense of the findings, possible next steps, and which questions still need to be answered.

How Our Team Makes Treatment More Comfortable

Comfort begins before an instrument is used. A calm visit is built through listening, clear explanations, reasonable pacing, and attention to the patient’s responses. When expectations are discussed openly, the appointment can feel less like something happening to you and more like something you are managing together.

A patient-centered conversation should include room for questions. You can ask what a procedure is for, how long a step may take, what you might feel, and when you can rest. If you are comparing options, dental sedation information can help you prepare questions about approaches for mild, moderate, or extreme anxiety.

Patients regularly tell us this approach makes the difference. Our hygienist Kelsey is known for staying patient and gentle even with patients who feel especially on edge, and Dr. Yamisleidis Aguilar is frequently described as calm, thorough, and reassuring from the first freezing to the last step of a procedure.

Trillium Dental Orléans provides comprehensive dental care for patients from children to seniors at its Orléans dental clinic on Mer Bleue Road, according to its location information. The same source describes clear communication, plain-language explanations, and coverage verification when applicable. Those practical details can make arranging care feel more straightforward, especially when administrative uncertainty adds to your stress.

What Nervous Patients Can Expect During a Dental Cleaning

A dental cleaning is usually a series of small steps rather than one long, mysterious event. The hygienist may discuss your current concerns, look at your teeth and gums, and use instruments to remove buildup. You can ask for a pause at any point, particularly if your jaw, neck, or shoulders become tense.

Some sensations may feel unfamiliar, including vibration, water, pressure, or brief sensitivity. They are not necessarily signs that something is wrong, but you should mention discomfort instead of trying to endure it silently. Agreeing on a hand signal before starting can make communication easier when your mouth is occupied.

If you’re planning a calming dental visit, you can feel more prepared by asking how long the cleaning may and whether the hygienist can explain each stage. A little music, slow breathing, or a planned break may help settle your attention. Afterward, ask what the hygienist noticed and what at-home steps would be most useful before the next visit.

Strategies to Ease Your Fears Before and During Your Appointment

Dental anxiety tips work best when they are realistic rather than demanding. You do not need to promise yourself that you will feel completely relaxed; aim instead to make the next few minutes manageable. Preparation, honest communication, and a little control can lower the pressure around the appointment.

Communication is Key: Talk to Your Dentist

Tell the office about your anxiety when you book, and repeat the concern when you arrive if needed. Ask who you should speak with if you become overwhelmed and agree on how you will signal for a pause. Writing down your questions can help when nerves make it difficult to remember them.

A short plan may be easier to follow than a long list of promises:

  • Arrive with enough time to settle in rather than rushing through the door.
  • Bring a written note describing your triggers and preferred communication style.
  • Use a prearranged hand signal whenever you need the team to stop or check in.
  • Take slow breaths and relax your shoulders during brief pauses.

These steps do not remove every anxious feeling, but they give you practical choices during the visit. You can also read general dental anxiety tips for ideas about identifying triggers and choosing communication that feels comfortable.

What If You Are Extremely Anxious About Dental Treatment?

Severe anxiety can make phone calls, forms, and even opening a dental reminder feel daunting. Avoiding care may feel like relief in the moment, but it can leave concerns unaddressed and make the next appointment seem even larger. You do not have to begin with extensive treatment; asking for a consultation about your fear is a reasonable starting point.

Tell the dental team how intense the reaction is and what happens when you try to attend. Depending on your health history and the planned care, a dentist may discuss ways to support relaxation, including sedation dentistry Orleans. This is also worth raising if fear has caused you to put off procedures like tooth extractions. Any sedation option should be reviewed carefully, with attention to your medical history, instructions, consent, and the arrangements needed before and after treatment.

If you’re searching for a dentist experienced with anxious patients, look for a practice where questions are welcomed and your boundaries are respected -this is a recurring theme in how our own patients describe their visits, from a senior patient who called a recent appointment the calmest dental visit of his life, to parents who’ve watched their children go from fearful to comfortable after just one appointment. It may help to bring a support person to the conversation, ask for written information, or schedule a shorter first visit. Progress can be gradual; a consultation, examination, or agreed plan can each count as meaningful progress.

How to Prepare for Your Next Dental Appointment if You Feel Anxious

Preparation can reduce the number of decisions you have to make while you are already tense. Confirm the time, plan your route, and give yourself a little extra time so arriving does not become another source of stress. If your anxiety has changed since your last visit, tell the office before the appointment rather than waiting until you are in the chair.

Pack anything that helps you communicate or stay comfortable, such as a question list, headphones if permitted, or details about medications and medical conditions. And if anxiety has caused you to delay care for a long time, know that catching up doesn’t have to mean starting with something drastic – even patients who eventually need restorative care like dental implants usually begin with the same first step: a conversation.

On the day, keep your goal modest. You might aim to arrive, discuss your concerns, and complete only the care that feels appropriate after the plan is explained. That approach can help replace an all-or-nothing expectation with a sequence of manageable choices.

Why Choose Trillium Dental Orléans for Your Dental Care?

Choosing a dental clinic is personal, particularly when fear has made care difficult in the past. Look for clear communication, a respectful response to anxiety, and a willingness to explain options without pressure. It also helps to choose a team that can handle whatever comes next – from routine visits to same-day emergency dental care to cosmetic dentistry at our Orléans clinic so you’re not starting over with a new, unfamiliar office every time your needs change. Patient experiences shared with the practice also highlight how clear communication and prompt attention can make an urgent dental visit feel more manageable – with front-desk staff helping confirm Canada Dental Care Plan coverage before treatment even began, so cost surprises weren’t added to an already stressful day.

A More Comfortable Dental Experience in Orléans

Trillium Dental Orléans describes care for the whole family, from children to seniors, serving Orléans and nearby communities. Its location information also says the team explains options in plain language and can verify Canadian Dental Care Plan coverage beforehand. Those documented details may be useful to someone seeking a less complicated path to care, though your comfort plan should still be discussed directly with the dental team.

A comfortable experience is not about pretending fear is absent. It is about being treated with patience while you ask questions, take breaks, and decide on next steps. If you have been postponing an appointment, a straightforward conversation can be the beginning of a more workable routine.

Conclusion

Dental anxiety is common, and it can be met with honesty, preparation, and compassionate communication. Tell the team what worries you, ask for a clear plan, and take the appointment one step at a time seeking support is a practical part of caring for your oral health.

If you’re ready to take that first step, you can become a new patient at Trillium Dental Orléans. Contact our team or call us directly at (613) 830-3033 just let us know you’re feeling anxious when you book, and we’ll plan the visit around that from the very first call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal to feel nervous about a dentist appointment?

Yes. Many people feel some degree of worry before dental care, especially when they have had an unpleasant experience or are unsure what to expect. Sharing that concern can help the appointment be adapted to your needs.

What should I say when I call to book an appointment?

Say clearly that you feel anxious about dental treatment and briefly describe your main trigger. You can ask how the first visit will work and whether the team can discuss comfort measures before treatment begins.

Can I ask the dentist to stop during treatment?

Yes. Agree on a hand signal or another simple way to request a pause before treatment starts. This gives you a reliable way to communicate when speaking is difficult.

What happens during a first dental visit?

A first visit may include questions about your health and dental history, an examination, and a discussion of possible next steps. You can ask for explanations before proceeding with any part of the visit.

How can I stay calmer in the dental chair?

Slow breathing, relaxing your shoulders, listening to permitted music, and arranging planned pauses may help. Choose one or two techniques that feel practical rather than trying to manage everything at once.

What if I have avoided the dentist for years?

Begin with an honest conversation or consultation and explain that embarrassment or fear has delayed care. A supportive professional can help you understand your current needs and create a gradual plan.

Is sedation appropriate for every anxious patient?

Not necessarily. Sedation depends on factors such as your health history, the treatment planned, and professional assessment. Ask the dentist to explain suitable options, preparation requirements, and aftercare before making a decision.

Now that you know a little more about Invisalign® teeth straightening treatments and how they work, you’re probably wondering about the logistics, such as the cost of Invisalign, what our dental consultations are like, and how often you’ll need to visit our Ottawa dental clinic for checkups and new Invisalign retainers. Here in part two of this blog series, our team at Trillium Dental will dive into some of the finer details of our Invisalign treatments, so continue reading for answers to more commonly asked questions about Invisalign!

HOW MUCH DOES INVISALIGN COST?

As family dentists, we get this question all the time, and the truth is that the price of Invisalign treatments varies from person to person. This is because some dental patients will require more Invisalign retainers than others (especially if they have a drastic overbite, underbite, or overlapping teeth), as well as additional dental appointments for checkups or to replace lost retainers. Another factor to consider is dental insurance, as some dental insurance plans cover teeth straightening treatments and others do not, and in many cases, they only cover a certain percentage or monetary amount of the overall cost. Nevertheless, the cost of Invisalign is typically very similar to the cost of braces, as recent advancements in dental technology have made this method of teeth straightening more accessible for many dental patients.

WHERE CAN I GET INVISALIGN RETAINERS?

One great thing about Invisalign is that many dentists today receive specialized training in the Invisalign treatment, meaning that patients can visit a number of Ottawa dental clinics for these “clear braces” without having to see an orthodontist, which is a separate dental practice. Invisalign technology is much different than that of traditional braces in the sense that there are no metal brackets to glue, wires to fasten, or rubber bands to replace. Rather, Invisalign retainers are a series of clear plastic trays that are molded to your teeth with gradual adjustments that result in a perfectly straight smile with no strings (or pokey metal wires) attached. At Trillium Dental, our family dentists are trained and experienced in Invisalign treatments, so please don’t hesitate to contact us if you are interested in straightening your teeth with these “invisible braces.”

HOW DO I START AN INVISALIGN TREATMENT?

Since every patient’s smile is unique, we begin every Invisalign treatment with an initial consultation at our Ottawa dental office. During this appointment, our dentists will look at the current alignment of your teeth in order to determine how you could benefit from this teeth straightening method. Here, we’ll assess your dental insurance coverage and payment options, then take a look at your bite, the space between your teeth (gaps, crowding, or overlapping), and your overall oral health. If we determine that you would be a good candidate for Invisalign, we’ll schedule another dental appointment where the first set of Invisalign trays is molded to your teeth. Then, you’ll return for regular dental checkups throughout the treatment period (typically every four to six weeks) to ensure your progress with Invisalign.

At Trillium Dental in Ottawa, we are pleased to offer Invisalign® teeth straightening treatments for dental patients who prefer a more discreet method than braces. These “clear braces” come with a number of benefits, as they are much less noticeable than metal brackets and generally cause patients less discomfort. Invisalign is the clear choice for many adolescents and adults alike, but many have questions about this advanced dental technology. From our family dentists and dental hygienists, here are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about Invisalign.

WHAT IS INVISALIGN?

Some patients who visit our Ottawa dental clinic for cosmetic dentistry treatments aren’t quite sure what Invisalign is, much less how it works or why so many people prefer it over traditional braces. Put simply, Invisalign is a teeth straightening method in which a set of clear retainers (also referred to as “clear braces”) are molded to a patient’s teeth with each set being slightly more straight than the one before. These teeth straightening retainers are clear and removable, making them a subtle and comfortable alternative to metal brackets with wires, rubber bands, spacers, etc. Plus, Invisalign is equally as effective as braces!

HOW DOES INVISALIGN WORK?

Another commonly asked question about Invisalign is how the treatment works, given that there are no metal brackets glued to the teeth with metal wires holding them in position. The answer is actually quite simple — Invisalign retainers work by holding your teeth in place with a clear plastic retainer that has been molded to the teeth, which gets switched out with the next retainer after just one to two weeks. These micro-adjustments continue until the patient is on the last retainer in the set, which is the ideal position of their teeth. When the patient has reached this stage of their Invisalign treatment, one of our dentists will assess their progress to ensure that no further corrections need to be made. Then, the patient will be provided with a retainer to wear at night from then on out in order to ensure that their teeth do not move out of the proper alignment over time.

HOW LONG IS AN INVISALIGN TREATMENT?

Like braces, the treatment duration of Invisalign is contingent on a number of factors, particularly how diligently you wear your teeth straightening retainers. The Invisalign treatment typically takes between 12 and 15 months to complete, assuming that the patient has worn their retainers at all times (ideally 22 hours per day), except to eat, floss, and brush their teeth. Oftentimes, Invisalign treatments take less time to complete than braces (which can take more than two years), but it can be tempting for patients to remove their retainers more often than recommended, which can prolong the process. However, if you’re consistent with wearing your Invisalign retainers as often as you should, in addition to maintaining good oral hygiene habits, you’ll have perfectly straight teeth in no time!

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF INVISALIGN?

As previously mentioned, there are many benefits of Invisalign teeth straightening treatments in terms of both aesthetics and patient comfort. Many dental patients opt for Invisalign because the retainers are clear and thus more difficult for others to notice at work and in other social settings, which gives them more confidence when talking with others. Not only are these “invisible braces” less noticeable than braces, but they are also less apparent to the patient, as they acclimate to them quickly and don’t have to endure the constant irritation of tightened wires, cheek scarring, and other painful complications of braces.

With this is the benefit of being able to eat whatever you want, as you can remove Invisalign retainers before you eat, then brush and floss your teeth before putting them back in. Anyone who has had braces knows how frustrating it is to not be able to enjoy your favorite foods because of your braces, and with Invisalign, that’s not an issue. So, don’t be afraid to bite into an apple or chew on your favorite candy when your Invisalign retainers are out, as long as you make sure to keep up on your oral health routine so you don’t encounter dental problems like cavities, gingivitis, or cracked teeth.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column] [/et_pb_row] [/et_pb_section]

Invisalign® is one of the most groundbreaking technological advancements we have seen in the field of orthodontics and cosmetic dentistry, as it provides a far more convenient and comfortable alternative to braces. Not only is Invisalign less inhibiting for patients who are undergoing a teeth straightening procedure, but it is also nearly invisible to others and takes less time to complete. That being said, many of our patients at Trillium Dental in Ottawa seek out Invisalign as a comfortable and discreet way to straighten their teeth. If you’re interested, here’s how it works! If you experience sudden pain, swelling, or damage to your teeth while using Invisalign, it’s important to seek immediate care from an experienced emergency dentist.

FITTING

Sometimes referred to as “clear braces,” Invisalign comes in the form of see-through retainers that have been molded to fit in your mouth with minimal discomfort and visibility. Your dentist will do this by taking an imprint of your teeth and ordering a set of teeth straightening trays that range from the first micro-adjustment to the final one, which keeps your teeth perfectly straight. Invisalign retainers are removable for eating and drinking, so it is critical for you to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours per day for them to be most effective.

SWITCHING RETAINERS

After two weeks of diligently wearing your first Invisalign retainer, you can switch it out for the next one in the progression, and so on and so forth until you reach the last teeth straightening tray. This is the equivalent of having your braces tightened, except it tends to be much less painful because it does not involve an orthodontist cranking the wires on your teeth. Of course, this varies from person to person, and some will feel more discomfort than others. It all comes down to how consistent you are with wearing the trays as often as they are meant to be worn.

EVALUATION

The process of straightening teeth with Invisalign retainers should only take 15 months, and the end result is well worth the wait. Once you have worn the final aligner tray for two weeks, we will have you visit our dental office so we can evaluate your teeth one final time. If your teeth are perfectly straight and any other issues such as an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or crowding have been corrected, we will provide you with one more retainer to wear only at night. This will ensure that all the time, money, and hard work you invested over the last year will not go to waste, and that you will have a beautiful, straight smile for years to come.

As adults who have undergone teeth straightening procedures ourselves, our dentists and periodontists at Trillium Dental in Ottawa know just how difficult it can be to pursue braces as an adult. There are many reasons why this is so, and we’ve heard them all time and time again. For many adults, braces cause a level of discomfort and self-consciousness that no one wants to experience during adulthood. Yet, these things shouldn’t keep you from obtaining a beautiful smile that you can feel confident about for the rest of your life.

We’ve all heard the stereotypes about braces: they’re dorky, they hurt, they’re meant for teenagers, everyone will notice them — the list goes on. In reality, it is perfectly alright to need braces as an adult, and no stereotype should stand in your way of seeking the dental care you need. However, recent technological advancements in the field of dentistry have made it possible for adults to be much more discreet about their teeth straightening processes. One of our all-time favorites is Invisalign®.

WHAT IS INVISALIGN?

Invisalign is similar to traditional braces in the sense that it serves to straighten your teeth over time, providing you with a stunning smile as the end result. However, Invisalign retainers are clear and nearly invisible to others, making them a far more appealing option for older adults. In addition to these “clear braces” being hard to notice, the process of straightening your teeth with Invisalign is also quicker, more comfortable, and more convenient. Here’s how it works!

Upon meeting with your family dentist to talk about the possibility of getting Invisalign retainers, we will take X-rays of your teeth in order to determine exactly what needs to be done. If you have an overbite, underbite, or crowded or gapped teeth, for example, we can customize your aligner trays to serve these unique needs. This customized series of teeth straightening trays will also include instructions for you to follow, as the first tray will be replaced with the next one once your teeth have made that micro-shift, and so on and so forth, until you have reached the end result after 15 months.

You might be wondering how you’d manage to eat and drink with a clear plastic retainer in your mouth at all times, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that they are removable. Before sitting down to eat, be sure to take your retainer out, as it is not meant to be kept in your mouth as you chew. Be careful though — two of the main drawbacks of Invisalign are the temptation to take it out too often and the tendency for people to forget to put it back in after eating.

WHY DO ADULTS CHOOSE INVISALIGN?

Invisalign sounds pretty great, right? As previously mentioned, part of the reason why so many adults love Invisalign is the fact that they are nearly invisible to others. The last thing working or otherwise busy adults need is to have the stereotypes associated with braces interfering with their daily lives. After all, the motive behind getting braces is to obtain a beautiful smile you can feel good about, so it’s only natural that you wouldn’t want people staring at obvious metal brackets on your teeth. With Invisalign, not only will be happy with your teeth after the work is done, but you also won’t hesitate to smile along the way!

Another thing that makes Invisalign a great alternative for adults is the fact that they are far more comfortable to wear than traditional braces. As professionals in family dentistry, we’ll be the first to say that braces aren’t always painless; in fact, they can cause a great deal of discomfort at first. With Invisalign, you won’t have to worry about dealing with noticeable metal brackets that rub against the inside of your cheeks and cause irritation. Invisalign retainers are so thin and snug that you’ll hardly notice they’re there!

Not only that, but any discomfort you feel with Invisalign will only occur for a day or so after you move on to each new retainer, which is a much smaller micro-adjustment that happens every two weeks. Compared to traditional braces, where you must visit your dental office to have your wires manually tightened every six to eight months, the micro-adjustments of Invisalign retainers are far easier to acclimate to. When worn diligently for 22 hours a day, seven days a week, Invisalign will leave you with perfectly straight teeth in just 15 months, as opposed to the somewhat unpredictable commitment of braces, which lasts anywhere from 18 months to over two years.

If you are an adult who needs braces and you don’t want to deal with obvious, sometimes irritating metal brackets, Invisalign is for you! There has never been an easier, more discrete way for adults to transform their crooked teeth into a stunning, youthful smile. All you have to do is schedule a consultation with your Ottawa dentist, let them set you up with a set of customized retainers, and wear them as instructed. The 15 months will fly by and you’ll have a perfect smile in no time!

Our dentists at Trillium Dental in Ottawa have provided many adults with customized Invisalign retainers that serve their unique needs and give them the smile they’ve always dreamed of. Most people wish they had straighter teeth but can’t stand the thought of having to wear braces. 20 years ago, this would have been your only choice if you really wanted straight teeth, but fortunately, dental technology has come a long way since then. What if we told you that getting beautiful, straight teeth was as easy as slipping in a clear retainer? That’s the beauty of Invisalign®!

At Trillium Dental in Ottawa, we are pleased to offer Invisalign as a comfortable and subtle alternative to traditional braces — an opportunity many people take advantage of to straighten their teeth during adulthood. Our dentists and dental hygienists are big proponents of choosing Invisalign over braces, and many of them have used this teeth straightening method themselves. That being said, here are some reasons why we recommend that you choose Invisalign over braces!

SUBTLETY

One of the main reasons why so many adults choose Invisalign over braces is because they are much more subtle, leading them to feel less self-conscious in social situations. It’s understandable that people with braces would feel uncomfortable talking to their friends, colleagues, and even strangers when all others can seem to focus on is the metal brackets lining their teeth. Anyone who has had braces will tell you that it is not uncommon to have food stuck in your braces without even noticing, which can land you in an awkward situation when people stare.

As the name indicates, Invisalign offers a practical solution to this, as the clear retainers (also referred to as “clear braces”) are much more inconspicuous. Though not all adults mind the appearance of braces, most prefer a more subtle alternative like Invisalign so they feel more comfortable going about their daily tasks as normal. Odds are, you’ve spoken to several adults who have Invisalign retainers and didn’t even notice!

COMFORT

Another major benefit of Invisalign retainers is that they are much more comfortable to wear than braces — they won’t cut your cheeks, irritate your gums, or get jammed up with food. Unlike braces, which are often painful (especially after being tightened), Invisalign retainers fit snugly on your teeth without digging into your gums and can be removed at any time. Though we do not recommend removing your Invisalign retainers for anything other than eating, drinking, and brushing your teeth, you at least have the ability to do so if and when needed.

TIME

More often than not, patients who choose Invisalign over braces complete the teeth straightening treatment in less time — 15 months, to be exact. Of course, this depends on how diligent you are about wearing your retainers, and if you only remove them for the reasons mentioned above, you should have straight teeth in just over a year. Braces, on the other hand, are much more unpredictable in terms of treatment duration — in fact, some people end up wearing braces for more than two years.

Fear of sedation is more common than many people think, and our friendly dentists at Trillium Dental in Ottawa are here to help you prepare for anesthesia so you can ultimately overcome your anxiety and have a smooth recovery. As it turns out, sedation dentistry is not nearly as scary as it seems — after all, you won’t hear, see, or feel a thing. Yet for some people, that is exactly what causes them fear. That being said, here are some tips to help you prepare for a sedation dentistry procedure, beginning with learning more about the procedure and sedation method, itself.

LEARN ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

While ignorance is bliss, this is often not the case with sedation dentistry. Prior to even scheduling your procedure, you must visit your dental clinic for a consultation with your dentist so that they can give you the lowdown on the procedure. During this meeting, you will learn exactly what the surgery entails, why it is the best option for you, what you can expect from the results, and how to prepare for sedation in terms of fasting, making driving arrangements, etc. You will also learn what kind of sedation is best for you and the nature of the surgery, whether that be IV sedation, oral sedation, or nitrous oxide.

This consultation is your chance to learn about the sedation dentistry procedure first-hand from the dentist who will be performing the surgery, so ask as many questions as you need to feel reassured. That way, you will have established greater trust for your dentist and will not be as afraid of losing control when you are given anesthesia. Another important thing to note is the importance of trusting and sticking to the information provided by the dentist in charge of your surgery, as staying up all night searching up the risks of anesthesia online will only put more irrational fears in your head. Remember, not everything on the internet is true, so it’s best to trust the experts at your local dental clinic.

FOLLOW DIRECTIONS

Hand in hand with learning about the procedure is following the instructions you are given by the dentist who will be performing the surgery. You may have heard that you should not eat or drink for eight hours prior to your procedure, and this is usually true due to nausea being a major side effect of most types of anesthesia. There are other health risks of not adhering to fasting instructions prior to oral surgery, so be sure to read the information your dentist gives you and take it seriously. That way, complications and surprises on the day of your procedure will be far less likely, which will put your mind at ease knowing that you have done everything in your power to prepare for success.

If you have an upcoming wisdom teeth removal, dental implant procedure, root canal treatment, or any other kind of oral surgery that requires sedation, follow these two tips to help ease your fear of anesthesia. It really is that simple, and the more you know, the better prepared you will be. Please don’t hesitate to contact our dentists at Trillium Dental in Ottawa if you have further questions about sedation dentistry, and request a consultation online if you think you might need oral surgery.

Some men think women don’t mask their feelings well. That statement as a whole can be debated, but when it comes to dental anxieties, they’re right.

Data from the Adult Dental Health Survey in Britain recently offered some interesting findings. After viewing pictures of dental procedures in action, women who admitted to having dental phobias were an incredible six times more likely to be disgusted by the images, compared with women who had no qualms regarding dentistry. The study also found that women voiced their disgust and fear of dental work considerably more than men who had the same anxieties. In addition, almost half of the adults surveyed were moderately to severely afraid of the dentist.

The solution to these common dental fears isn’t to avoid the dentist’s office at all costs. Maintaining a clean and healthy smile is vital to multiple aspects of your health, and professional care is the only way to ensure your teeth and gums are thriving. Trillium Dental, a trusted provider of family dentistry in Ottawa, encourages patients to take a hint from the women in the survey and voice their concerns to their dentist.

The thought of receiving extensive dental work can be scary. We understand. Our team of dentists and hygienists aim to make every patient feel comfortable and relaxed so they can receive important treatments in a stress-free environment. We excel in caring for patients with dental anxieties, and incorporate modern technologies and techniques that reduce discomfort during treatment.

For those with severe phobias, we offer sedation dentistry. Depending on the type of procedure and your anxiety levels, we can administer three types of safe and proven sedatives. This includes IV sedation, oral sedation and nitrous oxide, known as “laughing gas.” All three of these options allow us to care for your teeth and gums while you remain totally at ease.

Can you relate with the anxious men and women in the survey? If so, we encourage you to visit one of our office locations in Ottawa, Kanata, Nepean, Orleans or Stittsville. Dentists and hygienists will work with you to ensure a relaxing and stress-free treatment and the outcome of a healthy smile. Give Trillium Dental a call to learn more.
